Dairy Farmers Receive Disaster Assistance.

Georgia dairy farmers recently received payments under USDA's Dairy Market Loss Assistance Program. Distribution of payments under the program were completed June 30, 1999.

Under the program, CCC makes $200 million in payments to dairy farmers, who are suffering from record low milk prices. The $200 million, appropriated by the Congress for this purpose, is being divided among dairy operations based on each operation's production of milk in 1997 or 1998. Payments are limited to the first 26,000 hundredweight of production in the selected year. The payment rate is 22.47897 cents per hundredweight. This gave the largest Georgia producers just over $5,800 in payments. (Bill Thomas)
